We Chose to keep the Water in house. What now? 💧💧

We are fixated as a community on the long term rates rises and the council on the other side of the fence saying water reforms are too expensive and too hard to do in-house so everyone’s going to pay. They would much rather farm the opportunity out to a third party and it would be no longer there problem.

But maybe it’s time to flip that narrative around:

One way or another we are going to pay for the water so how can we make that investment work for us?

Because here’s the truth:

The cost of upgrading our Three Waters infrastructure (drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater) is coming. Whether it’s through central government control or local action, the pipes still need replacing, the treatment plants still need upgrading, and compliance still has to be met.

What if we took ownership of the challenge and kept the work, the jobs, and the money local?

🔁 A Circular Economy Opportunity

Imagine if we approached these upgrades the same way we built Network Waitaki and Whitestone Contracting, with community ownership at the centre.

We’d keep the supply chain local, using regional contractors, materials, and tradespeople. We’d create jobs, from civil works and plumbing to engineering, project management, and IT. We’d build capability for the next generation, training young people in high-value, high-skill sectors. We’d stimulate small business, creating opportunities for suppliers, consultants, and service providers across Waitaki.

This is more than pipes in the ground. This is a chance to build a local water economy, one that retains value here and strengthens our district long term.

⚖️ Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Control

Yes, there will be financial pressure. Rates will rise. But that’s happening regardless of who runs the system.

The difference is what we get back:

Control over how and where money is spent Accountability through elected local leadership Legacy in the form of stronger infrastructure and skilled workers

That’s not just spending. That’s investment with returns.

🛠️ Let’s Build a Legacy

This is our moment to shape what kind of district we want to be. Do we outsource responsibility—or do we back ourselves, our people, and our capacity to build a smarter future?

I believe the answer lies in bold local action, not resignation. If we plan it right, the money we spend today becomes the engine for jobs, innovation, resilience, and pride, for years to come.
