Q1 – Tell us about yourself
Kia ora, I’m Mark also known as That Food Guy. I’ve got a 40 year career in hospitality behind me with two decades running my own successful businesses. I believe in practical, honest leadership that puts people first.
Q2 – Top priorities for the next three years
People have told me they want better public transport, improved council-led waste and recycling, essential medical services, help with housing and no potholes. I want to see us building bridges between business, local government, iwi and education to create year-round economic stimulus and training pathways so that our young people can, and want to build their future here… in the mighty Waitaki.
Q3 – Why I’m right for the role
I care deeply about our community and our environment. I value honesty, authenticity, diversity, and unity with purpose. I’m a team player with the skills to build strong, respectful relationships, and I have a track record of bringing people together and delivering positive results from complex situations.
Q4 – Biggest challenge facing the District
Clearly the water reforms are a huge challenge for the district. Lets flip that narrative and see it as an opportunity – at an estimated cost of $265 million that could create local jobs, local business contracts, local supply chains, and training pathways into the trades. Water truly is the lifeblood of our wider community – let’s not lose control of it to an outside operator, lets be the ones that get it right and deliver the best possible upside for our people.
